ELECTION WORKING GROUP OF THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION INAUGURATED

  • 21-1-2011

A new Election Working Group of the NBA has been inaugurated. The new group was inaugurated on the 19th of January 2011 by the President of the NBA Joseph Bodunrin Daudu SAN. The group’s inauguration is coming barely six (6) days after the former group was disbanded by the NBA President at the NBA annual retreat for National Officers, Secretariat staff and Key members of the NBA. The old group according to the President of the NBA was disbanded because of their failure to monitor the Delta State re-run election which put the NBA in a thoroughly embarrassing situation. According to the President, the immediate reconstitution and inauguration of the new group is a drastic measure that had to be taken to restore the confidence of members of the NBA and the general public in the ability of the NBA to be there for the people.

The new working group is mandated to conscientiously and effectively monitor the election process starting with the voter registration exercise which has already commenced; they are to present their first report at the National Executive Council meeting of the NBA holding from the 16 – 18 of February. They are also expected to open a link on the NBA website where laws, rules, guidelines and regulations guiding the general elections can be assessed. The Leadership of the NBA in conjunction with the Election Working Group will initiate discussions with the security agencies to ensure an environment secure for the elections.

Dafe Akpedeye the Chairman of the Committee accepted the call to duty on behalf of members of the committee and stated that the EWG would put structures in place to ensure that they are able to monitor the election process at every stage to ascertain its credibility or lack therein.  He further stated that the EWG would continue to operate as a watchdog to ensure that through its efforts other stakeholders in the electoral process would be alive to their responsibilities and the electoral process would keep improving.
