- 22-9-2010
The President of the NBA on the 21st of September presented a speech at the National Stakeholders Dialogue. The Speech which was titled The Electoral Law and Constitutional Amendments: The Challenge of time dealt with the new Electoral bill passed by the National Assembly, where every amendment made was an obvious political calculation to satisfy Law makers and their friends. To buttress this fact he called attention to the deletion of sub sections (1) (h) and (1) (i) of the Act which exclude corrupt and indicted persons thus; ‘(h) he has been indicted for embezzlement or fraud by Judicial Commission of Inquiry or an Administrative Panel or a Tribunal set up under the Tribunals of Inquiry Act, a Tribunals of Inquiry Law or any other law by the Federal or State Government which indictment has been accepted by the Federal or State Governments respectively’
In his speech, he also dealt with salient issues affecting Elections such as Time Challenge, Voters Registration, Pre Election disputes, Post Election disputes and Section 134 of the Electoral Act Principles of Fair Hearing.
Finally he called attention to the Electoral Reform Committee of the NBA inaugurated by his very self on the 7th of September and consisting of the best hands in Electoral Justice. This Committee will look critically into the time related issues of the election process. This Panels report he said is expected before the 7th of October 2010 and will immediately be forwarded to all stakeholders including the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the National Assembly and INEC.
