NBA Committee On Local Government System Reform
The NBA has in the past collaborated with ALGON, the umbrella Association for all Local Governments on several projects to great satisfaction. This time it is intended to broaden the horizon of the relationship and (a) Suggest to Government the need to further reform the structures and indeed the foundation of LGC so as to make it corruption proof. (b) Encouraging good governance and honest work ethics in local governments. (c) Building bridges for access to justice through community legal aid schemes and the training of all local government justice sector personnel and (d) capacity building for local governments in order to attain the optimum as envisaged by the Constitution.
The primary responsibility of this committee is that they are to develop the tools for the engagement of all local governments, the legislature and the executive in the proposed reforms. Issues like having legal departments headed by county attorneys or district attorneys, the full utilisation of local government powers as devolved by the schedule to the Constitution are all matters for the Committee to note.
